The historical city of Agra is famous for being home to the iconic Taj Mahal, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. It was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal. Agra is mentioned several times as “Agraben” in the epic Mahabharata. This demonstrates that the city existed before the Mahabharata era. In the Mughal era, it served as its capital from 1556 to 1658. Another notable landmark in Agra is the Agra Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site that served as the main residence of the emperors of the Mughal Dynasty until 1638.
Agra has a vibrant cultural heritage, influenced by the Mughal era. It is known for its exquisite Mughal architecture, art, and handicrafts. It is one of the two cities in India which house three UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the other being Delhi. The city is known for its intricate marble inlay work, which can be seen in many of its historical buildings and monuments.
The city is situated on the banks of the Yamuna River, adding to its scenic beauty. The river was once called the Blue River on account of its pristine waters. Yes, it was so transparent and clear that one could have clearly seen its river bed with naked eyes.
Known for its delicious Mughlai cuisine, which includes dishes like kebabs, biryani, and various rich curries, the city also offers a variety of street food and sweets. The most famous amongst the sweet delicacies is "Petha," which is made from ash gourd and comes in various flavors.
Not just of the touristic importance, Agra is home to several educational institutions, including the prestigious Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar University, which contributes to the city's academic and intellectual environment. St. John's College at Agra is one of the oldest colleges in the country today. It was established in the year 1850 during the British Era.
Agra also tops the chart is its footwear industry. Today, Agra is the largest manufacturer of shoes in the country and is the second largest exporter in the world after China.
Mirza Asadullah Beg Khan, often known as Mirza Ghalib, the most famous and recognised Urdu poet, was born in this place. Surdas, a well-known 15th-century poet, was also born in Agra’s Runkta hamlet.
The Agra Bear Rescue Facility is the world’s largest Sloth Bear Rescue Facility. It was founded in 1999 by Animals SOS in conjunction with the Uttar Pradesh Forest Department.
